Gava:

Gava:

English version:

Today, we are pleased to present to you what we consider is one of the most beautiful interviews we've ever made for this blog.Being a member of Inti-Illimani is a privilege, an honor and, of course, a big responsibility. This is not understood by everyone, but current members of Inti-Illimani luckily accept it and what it's better, makes it their life. This time we wanted to introduce you to whom can be known as the "ninth" Inti, the person who assists every other Inti everytime they perform.Introducing Gabriel “Gava” Vásquez today makes us feel a very particular feeling. When we read his answers for this interview, we can find the modesty, the integrity and specially, the spontaneity which can only be achieved by a "simple soul", in Gava's own words. For those of us who have been lucky enough to spend some time with Gava in a relaxed and joyful environment, we can state that you are in front of those people who are naturally full of sense of humor, wit and music. It’s probably that many of you already know him. Gabriel is the first “Inti” on stage. Before the presentation begins, we watch him moving on the stage, paying attention to evert instrument and we all know how many instruments Inti-Illimani uses. This is his job and he can be called “Chile's best roadie" according to people who spend time and work with him.Below it’s the first part of the interview with “Gava”, Gabriel Vásquez.

How Gava started

EUI:
Gabriel, to beggin this interview we would like to know how was your childhood, what were your dreams to the future. What are the things that Gabriel has, when he was a boy, that keeps until now?

Gava:
I was born in Talca, in 1972 and I grew up sharing my life with two families: my very own and the one that adopted me. Back at those years my Mother worked as a housekeeper in a house that belonged to a couple of teachers. My Mother gave me a beautiful sister and my other parents, very generous, gave me other 6 brothers and sisters… hahaha… The teachers are the Zambra Yañez family and by those days, 3 or 4 month before I was born, my Mother had an accident and she was at the hospital for about 9 month, so then, this teachers’ family took care of me, somehow, until now. In my family, from my mother’s side, they are all peasants, my own mother in fact worked the field since 1940 until 1968, that year she came to Talca for the first time. My sister was already 7 years old and there weren't even plans for me yet. I tell this because it has to do with the following.
After the accident and my sort of regestation with this new family, my life changed without even notice it and I got used to watch two differents realities through my eyes. The father in this family, Mr Hugo Zambra, PapáHugo (DaddyHugo) to me, and the Mother, Ms Rosalina, MamáNina (MommyNina) to me, join their 6 kids, they showed me a World that I would not be able to see without them and the most important part was: the music.
PapáHugo was a Math teacher and he also played the piano wonderfully, I have never heard a best piano player and because of him I got to know so many kinds of styles, singers, authors, poets… Mozart, Chopin, Joan Baez, Jacques Brel, the Beatles, Duke Ellington and also by the time of 1978 and because of him I knew about Violeta and Victor…
It was after knowing about Violeta and Victor that I understood that music was a way to know my other half, the one that has to do with my Mother and the land and that I accepted without knowing very much about… now I remember the “tracks to loose mare” with an old woman singing on top of the small high wheat… hahaha… now I understand, now when I remember, that my Mother gave me Earth and my other family gave me Heaven…
If you ask me what is there from the kid I was, I would say just that: The possibility to keep living between the floor and the sky, the possibility to choose between right and wrong, good and bad, between God and Satan… I would say that I was, I am and I will be an illustrated ignorant… and because of that, I am a happy man.

EUI:
During your childhood or when you were a teenager, is there any memory you can relate with you getting into popular music? How do you feel the music calling?

Gava:
PapáHugo and my Zambra´s Brothers played the piano, as I said before, and there weren’t a few times when they tried to teach me… What a moron… I did not even wanted to try… I had enough just listening to them.
When I was in high school, some classmates formed a band playing Andean music… It was 1987 and of course I could not even make the phone rings so I offered myself to carry the instruments… hahahahahha… It was meant to be… I did not realized it back then… well, that was my first approach to the music: the guitars, the charango, the drums and the caja hunged of me as vines and I run everywhere so my classmates did not make fun of me… hahahahahaha.

EUI:
Once you get in touch with the music, how did you start to make it possible? Did you dedicated to one instrument, particulary?

Gava:
After carring instruments for a while and after my classmates left the band for going to College so there was vacancy and I applied for it, so me and my “quenita” were members of the glorious Raymi, which musical director was our dear teacher: Nelson Silva, but certainly, the hardest job was made by a little man on whom you could see the natural leader on, a real musical leader, my dear friend Manuel Meriño.

EUI:
We know you are from Talca (kind of small city in the south of Santiago). How did you see the chances to become a musician, living almost in the country side, taking as a matter of fact that to succed you must live in Santiago?

Gava:
Well, by those days the only thing you could see was playing in the school band but I failed one year so I lost my classmates and that was a good chance to see how Manuel was doing in Santiago to definitely deciding to came to Santiago.

EUI:
What are your musical influences? Did you had the chance to go to concerts or any kind or performances when you were a kid?

Gava:
About the concerts or performances in Talca in times of dictatorship… Yeah, right!!
But I do remember the band ORTIGA coming to Talca by the year 1982 perhaps, and we went to see them because one of the Zambra´s brother played there. Well, I think one of my biggest influences were PapáHugo and Gonzalo, my brother from the band. He recorded a disk named “In this place” and at the launch of that disk, recorded in 1983, Jorge Coulon made it as announcer in name of Inti-Illimani… hahaha… and destiny kept talking… hahaha.

EUI:
We know that you met Manuel Meriño at school… Can you tell us how did you met and how are you both related through music, until now?

Gava:
When and how we met… mmm, I can’t tell you exactly, he did played in Raimy, maybe at the halls of the school, or at the schoolyard, at the gym, at the shower place… hahahaaha… I don´t know, somewhere, he must be playing Silvio, that is for sure. Now, sometime there, we became friends and friends are forever and nor music nor Inti-Illimani is what keeps us together… Only the sentiment, the respect and admiration is what keeps us together after twentyfive years. Manuel showed me that my thing was not the music but this holly work that I do and that keeps me alive and happy. How did that happen? Playing and composing just like he does and inviting me to know the World through his guitar… and with someother´s guitars… hahaha, and I really appreciate it.

EUI:
Once you decided to became a musician, What were your projects? What did you wanted to do?

Gava:
Wow, that is a hard question. I think, somehow, music has always been part of my life and I also think that sometimes I wanted to became a musician, on stage I mean, play to get an aplause and that kind of stuff, but now I realize that is not what I want. I want to work for the music and for the musicians, I want music and musician treated with dignity and respect.

EUI:
In what part of your live you created “Gavalone”? Tell us about that “child” of yours.

Gava:
HAHAHAHAHAHA, this is a good one! Well, hahaha… Gavalone is a project created from nowhere and totally against time. I asked for a date to play with a friend of mine at the Chilean artist’s copyright asociation (SCD), I do not remember when did that happened, the thing is that my friend did not make it and he told me he would not do it until three weeks before. Leaving the date already taked it was not an option, that it would made me look bad with the people at the asociation, so another friend proposed me to make it alone, ALONE… hahahaha… and well, I am “Gava” so the concert was named GAVALONE and I was supposed to play “cuecas”, tunes and songs by Victor and Violeta. But I was writing poetry at that time, if you can call that pappers poetry, they were written late at night, usually almost drunk, not there yet but almost… hahahahaha… Who am I kidding? I was really drunk when I wrote that, but that was part of the loneliness of those days and it matched perfectly fine with the name, ALONE.
There were 8 people there at the concert that night, they would probably say more about GAVALONE, because I was barely drunk and I can’t remember that much.
Some time later another friend asked me to record that on a CD, nowadays that CDs work like “coasters” in some friend’s houses. When was GAVALONE created? In times of creative drinking.

EUI:
We know that you lived in Belgium and Barcelona. How was that experience? What did you learn from that?

Gava:
The truth is I had spent sometime living in Cologne, Germany with another of my Zambra Brothers and then I went to Brussels, Belgium, with a small slip of Catalan… Eventually, I spent a whole year in Europe and I had learned that “Love being far is not going to last” That was kind of the origin from GAVALONE!!!

EUI:
Somebody told us that you also were an stage assistant for Alberto Plaza (a Chilean singer-songwriter). What can you tell us about that? We realize that you need to develop as a musician. What do you think of that after your first record? Have you had some others experiences? A: I started working as a roadie with Alberto and I think it could not be better. Alfonso Younge teached me and I consider him the best, because he was professional and devoted and he taught me so. Besides, my first gig was in Lima, Perú and it was for free, so I had to work well and for free… hahahaha it could not be better! But it was there where I got to know my work well and I got a high level, I do not think that it would be possible If I had not had the experience with the staff of Alberto Plaza. He is great and many great people of the music had worked with him… He is not like “Lucho Jara” (another Chilean singer)… mmm, but that is a different story…
